Blue fenugreek - Shambala

Spicy-aromatic plant of the legume family, known since ancient times. It is cultivated as feed, food and medicinal. Plant 60 cm high. The whole plant has an intense mushroom smell with a slight nutty aroma. Fruits are fairly large beans (pods), up to 6-10 cm long, with large yellowish seeds up to 5 mm, 10-20 pieces in each bean. Their taste is sweetish with bitterness, improves after roasting, acquiring the taste of burnt sugar. They stimulate appetite, have anabolic and sedative effects, have bactericidal properties. Young tender leaves in early spring are added to salads, soups and sauces. The dried top of the plant, ground into powder, gives a persistent aroma to potato, mushroom, onion soups. Sow 5mm deep into prepared soil which is well-drained and in a sunny spot. Sow into drills 20cm apart, seeds should have 5cm spacing within a row. Germination takes 7 days approx. The plant will grow rapidly once germinated. Successional sow for a continuous supply. If harvesting for leaves cut the stems a few cm above the base when the plants are up to 25cm tall.
