Amaranthus Tricolor Illuminations

Amaranthus Illumination Amaranthus Tricolor is an annual foliage plant. Known as Summer Poinsettia, Joseph's Coat, and Tampala, Amaranthus Illumination can be easily started from seeds, and this Amaranthus forms tall sturdy columns that have bright green leaves below a dense packed gold and red foliage. Summer Poinsettia is a long lasting annual that grows taller and taller during the summer months, and its dramatic colors are best displayed in mass plantings. Amaranthus Perfecta, also called Summer poinsettia, features gorgeous scarlet and yellow leaves. This variety has a narrow growth habit, about 2 to 4 feet in height and it looks best in mass plantings. Amaranthus makes a striking statement in beds or patio containers. Growing to 2m in height, it bears somewhat fuzzy-looking tassles of dark red flowers in summer, followed by seed heads that can be red, purple, or yellow. The amaranth plant develops long flowers, which can be upright or trailing depending on the variety. These half-hardy annuals are suited to beds, borders and containers. 'Jacob's Coat' has foliage with red, green and yellow splashes and in Summer spires of deep red flowers. Amaranthus Perfecta will grow straight up providing its splendid colors all summer and fall until frost. Amaranthus makes a spectacular background accent, hedge, or border plant. Amaranthus Tricolor seeds can be either sown early indoors or directly outdoors, and since Amaranthus is susceptible to frost, the seeds have to be sown only after the last chance of frost has past and the soil has warmed. Keep at 65-75°F with evenly moist conditions by placing a humidity dome over the containers until germination occurs, or by sprinkling a thin cover of vermiculite over the pots.
