An old Czech variety of the giant white kohlrabi, known since the 18th century, produces very large stalks that grow up to 10 inches (25 cm), and fruits can weigh 4-5 kg. These giant kohlrabies are covered with a smooth creamy green skin that protects the white, tasty, juicy, and firm flesh. The variety is used mainly for long winter storage without losing its quality, remaining tender and sweet in large sizes or as a young "baby" kohlrabi. Even when reaching such fantastic sizes, its flesh remains tender and buttery in texture. Kohlrabi has a delicate sweet taste, incredibly crunchy and juicy, like an apple. ********************************************************************************************************************************************************************************** Sow outdoors March-May, where they are to crop, 1.5cm (½in) deep, directly into finely-prepared, well-drained soil, which has already been watered. Allow 30cm (1ft) between rows. Seedlings usually appear in 7-21 days. Thin out to 15cm (6in) apart. Water well until plants are established. Or, sow indoors , February-April, 0.5cm (¼in) deep, in a tray of compost. Water well and place in a cold frame or unheated greenhouse. Keep moist. Transplant 5cm (2in) apart to other trays, when large enough to handle. Gradually accustom young plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts) before planting out, May-June, 15cm (6in) apart into well-drained soil. Harvest: June-October.
