An annual herbaceous plant of the aster family from the central provinces of Chile, 45-55 cm high. It is also known as pineapple flower, apple-scented plant, fruit gum flower, gummy bear plant, and golden head. The stem is straight, strongly branched almost from the very base, as a result of which the plant looks like a spherical bright green bush with a diameter of 30-35 cm. Each branch of the stem ends with a capitate inflorescence. The flowers are yellow, collected at the ends of the branches in single heads of spherical shape with a diameter of 8-9 mm. Blooms in June-August. A very small amount of fresh or dried flowers will provide a persistent pleasant aroma to tea, confectionery and homemade wine. *********************************************************************************************************************************************** Sow February to April on the surface of lightly firmed, moist seed compost in pots or trays. Keep at a temperature of between 15-20C (59-68F). After sowing, do not exclude light as this helps germination. Keep the surface of the compost moist but not waterlogged; germination will usually take 14-30 days. When large enough to handle, transplant seedlings into 7.5cm (3in) pots or trays. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days before planting out after all risk of frost, 30cm (12in) apart.
