This is a mid-season variety. Vegetation period 85-90 days. Young leaves and petioles can be collected within 40-45 days after germination. Rosette of leaves upright, height 45-50cm. The leaves are large, oblong-oval in shape, slightly bubbly, violet-green in color. Stems are thick, 25-30cm long, red-crimson. Salad and borscht are made from leaves, and stems are stewed or boiled as asparagus. Sow thinly April-July, where they are to crop, 2.5cm (1") deep, directly into finely-prepared, well-drained soil, which has already been watered. Allow 40cm (16") between rows. Seedlings usually appear in 14-21 days. Thin seedlings to 15cm (6") apart. Water well until plants are established. Regularly pick a few leaves and stems at a time, without stripping the plants, allowing them to continue growing. Harvest: July-November.
